Narcissist, def. (1) a person who has an excessive interest in or admiration of themselves. (2) a person who thinks the world revolves around them. If you saw the O.J. Simpson interview that recently aired on Fox but was taped 12 years ago I think we witnessed a prime example of a narcissist, in full. It made any reality show you’ve seen previously look like midnight mass at the Vatican. If you’ve ever dealt with a narcissist, as most of us have on some level, you know the M.O., the victim is turned into a villain and that was dialed up with The Juice during the interview. By the time the conversation ended O.J.’s dead ex-wife Nicole went from murder victim to villain. Simpson faulted Nicole for being an overly attentive mother, for hanging out with the wrong people, for not telling him she was dating after their divorce, etc. He looked like he was taking pleasure in listing what he considered her weaknesses. His anger with her more than 10 years after her death was not hidden either to the point it has been reported that he went to her gravesite and raved out. The most chilling aspect of the interview however was when he went through a “hypothetical” reenactment of the murders. Gone was the theory Simpson trotted out after the slaughter that it was carried out by a drug dealer or dealers. No, not only was there no new murderer theory, HE was the “hypothetical” killer along with his imaginary friend Charlie who held the knife until it was time to do some killing. I, like you, thought what possible benefit is there to do this interview. I know he can’t be tried again so I guess it goes back to that definition of narcissist. Even when he described the physical abuse of Nicole during their time together it was packaged in some bizzaro explanation that seemed to indicate she had it coming. A stalking moment was dismissed cavalierly as “hey I was in the neighborhood so I thought I’d stare in her window and bang on the door.” It’s hard to fathom that he was found not guilty of the murders in the criminal trial when blood from Nicole and Ron were found in his vehicle. How often has blood from other people just randomly landed in your car? And oddly enough people who were just murdered. People who do heinous things obviously are in denial and wired differently but how when you’re sawing off someone’s head literally or “hypothetically” do you tell yourself that somehow this is okay? For a narcissist the victim always becomes a villain. That’s how?!
