I admit there are a lot of things I don’t get, climbing Mt. Everest, crypto currency, Chris Harrison’s skill set but one of the real pissers is how a number of humans don’t understand animals. I have done a number of stories over the years where people wander into a wild animal’s habitat and then are shocked when they are attacked and often the end of the story is the animal is killed. Killed for what, for doing what it is programmed to do? Wild animals are wild, it says so right on the Garrforce coffee mug. It’s as if the thinking should be “well the animal should’ve known better.” Huh? Ok that’s one aspect of this discussion but my focus here is what is happening at the end of this pandemic. There are reports across the country that “large numbers of people” are returning pets that they adopted in the past year. Yes, mopes who adopted pets at the start of Covid are now returning to their offices, starting to travel more, etc. and find that they can no longer care for the pet. WTF! This is not like a jacket you bought and when you wore it once you just didn’t dig it and now want to return it. Hey stunod you know this is an actual living thing right? The shelters that are seeing a spike in returned animals say that after a year of being in a new home and routines can make it very hard on them when they are brought back to the shelter. YEAH! Imagine, you get used to your surroundings, hopefully are treated well, establish a nice rhythm and then suddenly your back in a cage. Contrary to what some people may think, animals, especially domesticated ones, have deep emotions and if you’ve ever had a dog or a cat you would know within about 2 days how attached they get to you. And how do you just load up a pet and bring it back to the shelter? Don’t you feel any connection after a year with this dog or cat? I don’t get a lot of things and I guess I shouldn’t be surprised to hear about this since a number of people don’t give a shit about anybody let alone an animal. I will dispense the same advice I give to people who want to try hard drugs, start with wine, beer, highballs, what have you and see if that gets you off before you move on to meth. Now if you’re thinking about getting a pet start with a stuffed animal but it has to be a stuffed animal that poops and pees and needs to go out and needs to be fed several times a day and would like your attention once in a while and not chained up in the backyard all day. Actually forget it, if you’re older than 8 and have to be told these things just go buy a jacket instead.
