Hate to break it to you but Earth has experienced five major extinction events, 5!, wiping out over 99% of species that once existed. Some possible causes include climate change, volcanic activity, and asteroid impacts. The most recent mass extinction event occurred at the end of the Cretaceous Period approximately 66 million years ago. This event, often called the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg), is best known for the extinction of the non-avian dinosaurs. Scientists have found that a mass extinction is due any moment now. Grab your ankles. Their research has shown that every 62 million years-plus or minus 3m years-creatures are wiped from the planet’s surface in massive numbers. Why are you telling us all this Garry? Well, as I have stated on my program “nature is in charge” and no matter what we peoples do and think is so freakin’ cool, if nature wants us out there is absolutely nothing we can do about it. Oh sure we have our Stanley Cups and electric cars and water parks and McRibs and AI and Pringles and Comic Con and slip on shoes and Jardiance and TSA pre-check and donut holes and handicap parking and WD-40 and Kardashians and taco tuesdays and floor mats and adult diapers and awards shows and BK have it your way and EZ pass and pre-made Manhattans and wine condoms…..BUT IT DOESN’T MATTER. The real pisser to me is even if we don’t experience the next mass extinction in our lifetime our whole time here is so damn short in the scheme of things and we experience so much fugazi, for what? It doesn’t matter, enjoy the ride. I hate to sound like a calendar cliche but look up in the sky at night, the universe doesn’t give a damn about us and we’re overdue for that 6th mass extinction.
