Five years ago I was the afternoon host on radio station WGN-AM in Chicago. One day the general manager called me into his office and said he wanted to move me to their digital platform which the station had not really devoted much energy to. I thought that was odd in that I had the highest ratings on the station at the time. The reason he gave was something about not having enough female listeners which was strange because to have the ratings I had it would have to include a good number of female listeners and that fact was on paper and not something I was just pulling out of my keister.

Anywho, I suggested we not change anything and keep talking even though a move he thought would be good made no sense. But wait, it gets weirder. The next day I go into work and a co-worker followed me into my office and says he was sorry to hear I was no longer on the AM, to which I replied, “what are you talking about?” He said a press release had gone out announcing my move to the digital signal. During that meeting the night before no definitive timeline was given on any changes and certainly not for it to HAPPEN THE NEXT DAY! A complete blindside to me, the listeners and of course the advertisers. Why did this happen the way it did?? I have no idea but keep in mind within the same week this same management also announced the station would no longer carry the Cubs broadcasts and in concert with that revelation got on the air and dumped all over the Cubs. Okay let’s unpack this shall we. You have the Cubs for most of 90 years and it’s obvious at that point that their rebuild was going to pay dividends soon and you walk away right before the payoff… THE WORLD SERIES!!

Oh, just a side note, the afternoon show for the last 5 years on WGN has not had nearly the ratings I had and that’s not braggadocio that’s a fact. Guess they don’t have enough women nor men. Just venting for all of us who’ve had to deal with this nonsense in any line of work. FYI I will be hosting the morning show on WLS-AM 890 the week of June 24-28 from 5:30 to 9 while Mancow is on vacation. Hope you get a chance to listen. The podcast will continue as normal.
